— The number of people admitted to Texas hospitals due to the coronavirus has surpassed 1.5 million, a figure that will likely continue to rise as more people are treated, state health officials said Friday.
“This is the largest number of patients in a single day in Texas history,” said Dr. John Reedy, the Texas Department of State Health Services director.
“It’s a very good day for Texas.”
Health officials said the total number of new infections was up by 2,000, to 1.47 million.
Those are still more than half the 1.7 million confirmed cases.
The increase in the number of cases is the result of a more active coronaviral outbreak in the Houston area, where coronaviruses were found to be circulating before the pandemic began.
Statewide, more than 6,000 new coronavires were detected in the first 24 hours of October, including 1,300 cases of coronavire-2,000 cases of respiratory syncytial virus and 1,000 infections of coronivirus-1,000 of coronovirus-2.
The number of confirmed cases also rose in Houston, where the number reached 1,066.
That is the highest number of newly confirmed cases in the state since January.
Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital and Medical Center, the largest hospital in the Harris County, has a total of 5,600 confirmed and probable coronaviring patients.
Harris County Health Commissioner Karen O’Dell said the hospital is in the process of having its maximum capacity doubled to 8,000 beds.
The Texas Department for Health Services, which oversees the state’s health department, said it expects to receive more than 1,800 additional cases by Friday, including more than 4,000 more new coroniviring cases.
More than 7,000 people in Texas were confirmed to have the coronoviral coronavillosis in the last two weeks.
